HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED TO WRITE YOUR BOOK: 30 AMAZING TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED

how to stay motivated to write a book

I hope this meets you well, we are still under lockdown as I write this post, this lockdown is tough on everyone and I am sending my love to you hence this wonderful post. We all know writing is hard, If it was all rainbows and sunshine I would have published 50 books by now, but it is what it is. So currently I am working on my debut novel,๐Ÿ’ƒ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽˆ and I lose motivation like every other writer every now and then, it is a common thing with writers all over the world, so I decided to share some great tips to keep you motivated to write your book, let’s jump in!!!

1. WRITE ABOUT YOUR INTERESTS

If you went to medical school for however long and you had no interest in medicine whatsoever, no one needs to tell you how the experience would be, unfulfilling and painful right? That’s the same thing with writing, so write about your interest as that will fuel your writing process and journey.

2. TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY

We have all been at that point of our life, where we deny ourselves the truth about something because of pleasure or one reason or the other, with writing the very first step in losing motivation is not been accountable. Take accountability for your actions, accept the fact that you are total control of the decisions you make. You need to understand it’s no one’s job to get you truly motivated but yourself. No one should care more about your dream than you do.

take accountability for your writing

3. GAIN PERSPECTIVE

Life sucks sometimes, bad things happen, people have real-life struggles every day, there is everyday crisis everywhere, do you want to die knowing you didnโ€™t do all the things to pursue your dreams?

4. BE YOUR OWN HYPE MAN

You should be your number one raving fan. You have taken accountability and have gained perspective, but your book is not written yet, this is the time to be your own hype man, get yourself fired up. Do something that makes you fired up, It must not be writing-related, personally I like to listen to music that motivates and inspires me or go for a workout session to get pumped up. So feel free to do whatever fires you up.

5. KNOW YOUR WHY

You know that initial thought you had about the plot of the book you are writing at the moment? That is your why, the raw unfiltered thought that pushed you to start writing your book. The reason you opened your word processor by 3 AM in the morning. Knowing your why helps to keep you focused on the goal and fuels your writing energy. It is the sole reason you get excited about the thought of being a published author and it inspires you to keep pushing. Write it on a sticky note and stick it to a surface around your study or writing workspace, know your WHY and run with it !!

6. DISCIPLINE YOURSELF TO WRITE EVERY DAY

Whoops, yes I said it ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ . I am also guilty, calm down. Well, a hard pill to swallow but zero word count doesn’t write your book does it? So get writing, train your mind to write every day, HOW? scroll down.

word count goals

7. SET COUNT GOALS

Set a daily word count for your WIP (work in progress).Don’t set goals that are not feasible, because this will only lead to a crash and burn scenario. set a count goal that even on your worst days you could meet it, and don’t stop if you pass the count goal for that day but still feel inspired to write, don’t live by the goal, grow with it, in other words as time goes on you could change your count goals. Currently, my count goal is 500 words per day, I try to stick to it but I am not 100% successful all the time.

8. YOU DESERVE A TREAT

Reward yourself whenever you achieve a count goal, if you lack the motivation to write a particular scene, tell yourself if I write this, I get this or that and go all out and get that thing for your self, but only after writing that scene. When you acknowledge an accomplishment it makes you feel happy and good about yourself and a happy writer produces an even better manuscript. So stay happy ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜Š.

9. TAKE A BREAK

A house wasn’t built in a day, neither can your book. Read that again !!! Don’t set goals that are not feasible to attain, when you start to lose inspiration to write, take a break, go do something different that’s not writing-related to get your mind off things a bit and get your creative juices pumping again. Let your mind relax a bit.

get rid of distractions

10. GET RID OF DISTRACTIONS

Disable your wifi and sit down in front of your computer or whatever you use to write, you need to stay focused, so you don’t need that notification from Instagram about the cute girl’s cat or that funny video that went viral on Facebook. so get rid of any form of distractions when you are about to write.

11. USE YOUR NOTEBOOK

If your anything like me, my notebook is an invaluable masterpiece and I carry it wherever I find myself. If you are confused right now about the awesomeness of a notebook, head over here. So when your stuck and need that helping hand or enchanting box of fresh ideas, pick your notebook and go through it, read the old notes from two years ago or that note about that compliment you got from your boss two weeks ago, just read your notebook ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„.

12. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

You want to be sure you are actually moving and not standing at a spot, it’s even better to move at snails speed than not to move at all, so track your progress to know how well you’re doing and how on track you are with your book. When you see those count goals adding up, it could really inspire you to keep writing. Track your progress with a spreadsheet or whatever tool you would prefer.

writing together

13. GET A WRITING BUDDY

I am so guilty of this, woah ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ you probably think I am a lonely poor soul, well I don’t have a writing buddy just yet because all my friends have no interest in writing whatsoever. So I need to either make more friends or change my friends, making more friends it is. I think a writing buddy would really motivate you to write and you have someone to share your ideas with.

14. TRY CREATIVE WRITING PROMPTS

So your feeling less pumped to finish that paragraph, open a prompt generator and spin out ideas for your next sentence and get writing.

15. PUT IT IN INK

So we all have great ideas in the craziest places like in the kitchen while chopping some onions that are messing your eyes up or in the shower and even before going to bed or in the cinema you name it. The problem here is we imagine how fancy that thought or idea would be in our story, how it would develop your plot or a particular scene in our story, we almost always forget to write it, so when next you have that magical thought that would make your book the next bestseller be sure to write it down, that’s where your notebook comes in ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜Ž.

If you can think it, You can write it

writing space

16. FIND YOUR OWN SPACE

We all have that magical place that does it for us, it could be the coffee shop down your street, your favourite library two streets away or even by the window side in your bedroom. It doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy, just find a space that lets all your creative juices out and you are super comfortable to write in and let your thoughts run wild.

17. VIBE

Be sure to have fun while writing, it shouldn’t be a place of demons and witches unless you are writing a paranormal fantasy novel๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚. Make writing a place you would be happy to go to if it were a physical place. So enjoy that joke your main character told her best friend or that event that went down at the mall in your story, just enjoy all of it ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š.

18. SLAY YOUR DEMONS

We all hope to be happy every single day of our lives, but that’s not always the case, so why not turn those bad days to jewels, what does not kill you gives you something new to write about, so be sure to pop open your writing pad and get writing when you’re at your lowest trust me that’s when you produce raw gold on paper ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ.

What doesn’t kill you, gives you something new to write about

19. GO DIGITAL

We all need help to improve our writing process and journey and that’s where tools come to play, do not be afraid to try that new grammar checker or that editing tool as they enhance the writing process. Be sure to check out this grammar checker review to get started.

outline your writing

20. OUTLINE

Are you a plotter or pantser ? I was a bit of a different one on a different day. If pantsing works for you, that’s great but I would love to say plotting is the way forward, it helps you see the entire journey of your book even before you start writing your book. So get plotting.

21. PUSH THROUGH WRITERS BLOCK

If you sit and wait for inspiration to write, you may never publish a book, so don’t sit around waiting for inspiration, go find it !!

22. DONT EDIT WHILE YOU WRITE

This is very tempting, but leaving your raw ideas on the table is a good way to stay motivated as this would keep the story you have in mind fresh and unfiltered ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜.

treat writing like a job

23. TREAT WRITING LIKE A JOB

I heard of a writer who dresses up every morning in a beautiful Italian suit, all clad in nice cologne and lovely shoes with his black suitcase, he takes the lift with other tenants on his floor and goes down to the last floor to an empty room to write every day, and his wife dare not disturb him during his working hours. So lesson to take from this, treat writing like a real job and watch the benefits pile sky high.

24. FIGURE WHY YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO WRITE

So you haven’t written in two weeks and your word count is staring at you in the face, your feeling guilty but the first step in getting your mojo back is to find out why you have not been able to write and tackle it. Have you just been lazy or scared if people will read your book? whatever it is figure it out and tackle it.

25. CONFIDE IN A CRITIQUE

Building writing relationships is such a blessing, confide in that your writing buddy to constructively critique your draft, you could do this for scenes or chapters. I am very possessive of my drafts, so this step is still a work in progress for me.

26. READ A BOOK

What better way to build a house than to watch others who have built houses? To get inspired to write you have to read, be sure to read books in the genre you are writing about. This could inspire a scene in your story or just make you feel motivated to write.

27. PENALTIES

The same way you reward yourself after each writing accomplishment, be sure to give yourself penalties when you don’t meet those goals, don’t be too harsh on yourself, you could say, I wouldn’t binge-watch that movie if I don’t write this particular scene today.

28. EDITING IS YOUR BESTFRIEND

Editing exists for a reason, don’t be to cut upon your half baked drafts, don’t get hung up on a poor scene, there is always room for improvement when you are done writing your draft.

inspirational quotes

29. READ INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

Those beautiful words can shift your mood from doom to gloom, so be sure to switch things up with a few. Here is a good place to start.

30. ASK QUESTIONS / RESEARCH

Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you are stuck on something you lack knowledge on. Ask a learned person or do proper research on the subject.

That was a long list but I am sure by now you have caught a few tips that would keep you motivated to keep writing. If you have more tips, please share in the comments.Good luck!! Sharing is caring ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
